The Cities of Brampton and Mississauga initiated the Hurontario / Main Street Study to develop a Corridor Master Plan that integrates rapid transit, land use and urban design for the corridor stretching from Port Credit to Downtown Brampton. Reverse chronology: DISPLAY PANELS: The latest Public Information Session in Mississauga was held on March 31, 2010 at Mississauga Civic Centre and presented study findings and recommendations. The presentation panels from March 31 session are available on the City's webpage (click the links under Public Meeting #3). A comment sheet is also available on the webpage. National Post article (March 31, 2010): Brampton, Mississauga hope their LRT survives: Ontario tells Metrolinx to cut $4-billion. Excerpt: "Officials in Mississauga and Brampton are hoping the province's plans to slash Toronto's transit funding will not affect Peel Region's ambitious plans for a streetcar connecting the two cities. ... The proposed LRT line would cost an estimated $1-billion to $1.2-billion, be about 20 kilometres long and replace buses along the corridor, which carries as many as 26,000 transit-users a day. It would have about 30 stops as well as connections to existing GO Transit lines and transit terminals en route. The transit line will likely consist of both reserved LRT right-of-ways and mixed-use traffic lanes." Mississauga News article (March 31, 2010): Is rapid transit line doomed?. Excerpt: "As Mississauga officials get ready to host an open house at City Hall tonight about the proposed Hurontario St. light rapid transit line from Port Credit to Brampton, they have to be wondering if the project will ever get off the drawing boards. Last week in the provincial budget, the Dalton McGuinty Liberal government announced it's putting a hold on $4 billion worth of big-ticket transit initiatives in the GTA .... If proposed subway extensions in Toronto are being delayed, it seems likely that Ontario will also be pushing off other expensive projects. It's estimated the 20-kilometre Hurontario line will cost more than $1 billion." March 5, 2010 - Project Newsletter #3 (the final in the series) has now been released. February 17, 2010: The project's Status Update Report: Feb. 4, 2010 was presented at General Committee of Council recommending approval for the next round of public consultation under Phase 2: Environmental Assessment. The Report recommends Light Rail Transit (LRT) for the Hurontario Corridor from Brampton to Port Credit. Note that implementation is presently unfunded. Mississauga News article (Feb. 18, 2010): Light Rail Transit on track. Excerpt: "A proposed $1.2-billion Light Rapid Transit system along the Hurontario St. corridor will alleviate gridlock problems in the city – provided provincial funding comes through, say City officials. A consultant’s report presented during today to councillors said an LRT along Hurontario, from Port Credit to downtown Brampton, has the potential to accommodate some 30 million riders by 2031. When fully implemented, transit riders will be able to travel the 20-kilometre stretch in about 39 minutes, said the report. Matthew Williams, project leader of the Hurontario-Main Street Study, said the project has been identified by Metrolinx, the public authority that manages transportation planning within the GTA and Hamilton area, as one of its Top 15 projects over the next 15 years." June 10, 2009 : The next study phase involves assessing rapid transit alternatives including technology choices (BRT or LRT), station locations and corridor alignment options that meet the requirements and advances the Provincial Environmental Assessment review process. There will be more detailed information on selected corridor locations that will help to visualize potential opportunities in terms of built form and streetscape. This information was made available at a Public Information Centre held on June 10, 2009 at City Hall. March 4, 2009: The Hurontario/Main Street Study has completed the first study phase and produced a Directions Report that defines a vision for the evolution of this corridor that connects Port Credit to Brampton. The Vision reflects the integration of rapid transit service, land use and urban design. The Executive Summary was presented to the City of Brampton and City of Mississauga Councils in March, 2009.
